SOMEONE STILL LOVES YOU BORIS YELTSIN

This Missouri band's music is so plainly likable that they should consider running for public office -- even the off-putting name wouldn't deter any voters who appreciate the shy prettiness of the Shins and the sweeter, least brash moments of the New Pornographers. In fact, you might easily mistake the tuneful melancholy of "Think I Wanna Die" (MP3, video below) for the latter and the foggy, low-key "Glue Girls" for the former, and that's fine. SSLYBY don't want to cause a ruckus; they'll sway you by thawing hearts and inspiring satisfied nods.

ICE PALACE

Adam Sorensen (vocals/guitar), Sarah Schneeberger (bass/keys), Jacob Grun (guitar/vocals), Joe Gaskill (drums)

"Ice Palace's Adam Sorensen has to be one of the brightest new dark-night-of-the-soul singer-songwriters to come out of these parts in a while. The band's debut, Bright Leaf Left...offers further proof that when it comes to the big rock candy mountain, minimalist beats, trippy words, quietly catchy melodies, and a scabbed-over broken heart go a long way."
